The heat sink essentially serves the same function as a ceramic casing on a power supply.  It retains the heat emitted from the CPU so it doesn't burn itself out, plus giving it a small direction to focus the heat which the fan mounted on it can disburse evenly.  The overall goal is to keep the inside of the computer as cool as possible to preserve the longevity of the components within it.  I have yet to power the system up so I don't know how much more effective ceramic power supplies are but I'll let you know.

LOL well true. However I think "retention" is used in the context of
referring to the heat sink which is supposed to retain the heat from the
processor to then be removed...or something like that. I think they call
that an "oxymoron" like "Central Intelligence Agency" or is that an Orc?
