Not true. Rooting has a random length it seems. Sometimes the root wears off really quickly. Sometimes it will last throughout the entire fight. So rooting it works well, as long as it remains intact. Hitting the rooted creature, melee, or spellwise, doesn't nullify the rooted effect. Cancel Magic does however.
