It kind of depends on what you are going to do with your pet. I like to keep
my pets for a long time (a few hours each), and I like to take on pretty strong
MOBs. If I had a lower level pet, I would not be able to take on the same level
of MOBs, and I would be required to burn more of my own resources (mana and
health) on each kill. In short, a lower level pet means more down time when
hunting. On the other hand, if you only keep a pet for short periods of time, then
it makes sense to keep what you get on the first roll. Otherwise, you end up
wasting time gathering bone chips and regaining mana from the pet spell. At the
lower levels, it seems that the pet level makes more of a difference, as the pet tends
to make up a bigger percentage of the combined caster/pet force. I'm in the lower
20's, and I still usually recast for bigger pets.
