I went halfelf just because of that. But there are other light
sources. Fire beetle eyes work well until you get a lightstone.
Without a magic weapon wisps are out of your league.

Once you a few GLS go to North Karana and give it to one of the
gypses. She'll give you a book you can sell for about 10 plat, and
you can sell it to her! I think her name is Myrisla?
