Just recently when they said we could re activate our old accts for free for a month I logged into my very first acct and the characters were still there after 2 years of not playing it.

The official time is 3 months, but many people have said they left for
longer times and all the characters were still there.

I have quit playing on several different occasions, a
couple of times for 3 months, once for over 4 months.
I have always re-activated my account and all my
characters and items were just as I left them. I would
say that if you want to stop playing for the summer,
when you re-activate your account, all will be well.
:)
