This is true. I was grouped with a magician, and we were jumped by a
sand giant. Her pet ran like hell, but my pet bravely engaged the
giant, allowing me to take two steps and get halfway through a gate
spell before I was splattered all over the sand.

Charmed creatures are indeed able to be commanded. Enchanter pets,
though
in permanent follow mode, will engage ANY creature if it attacks you
(unlike
other pets who just wont fight). The enchanter pet is loyal until
death.
It will not run.
