Sorry to hear that mata. I know that my last mistake of this was in beta.
I do not believe the NPC's would kill you for casting a harm spell on
yourself, but it is possible. I see people casting DD spells on themselves
(for some stupid reason) and guards do not attack them. This could be a
bug...report it. Anyway, it is an overall smart idea to not cast those
spells on you or others when NPC's are around.

you have learned as I did ;)

I cast ROOT on MYSELF and got killed for it in Felwithe, so NO ROOT at all
in town!!!!
