The research skill is for making spells that usually can't be bought. For
instance, I haven't found anyone that sells the 16th or 20th lvl AE spells,
not even in the great Library of Erudin. But, you can buy a book from your
guildmaster that has some of those AE spells you've been looking for. Its
actually a receipe for making spells, usually runes. The books are written
in different languages though, so you need to increase your skills in all
languages. At lvl 16, if you check your trainer, you'll see that a whole
slew of languages are now available for you to learn.

There is also a Tome that you buy. It acts just like a sewing kit. You put
the runes in the book, hit combine and presto, you have a new spell. You
can also buy quill and parchment and scribe spells, haven't done it yet
though, so am not sure exactly how it works. Hope this helps you understand
the skill a little better ;)
